Midsummer Common Gate Update

Residents recently wrote us about the fact that the gate to Midsummer Common from Victoria Avenue has been open recently. The manufacturer visited this morning and removed an obstruction to the laser which had prevented the gate from closing.

Also, because the gate is being used so frequently there are discussions about upgrading the solar panels and/or the wind turbine to generate more power. We will post updates to the situation here to keep you all informed.

Huppert’s law could save local pubs

On 10th July, Cambridge MP proposed a new law to Parliament which could save ‘local pubs’ and independent shops.
Julian Huppert introduced the draft law as a Private Members Bill, and is now seeking government and backbench support to get it through the Commons.
“12 pubs a week are closing up and down the country, many of these are focal points for local communities,” said Julian Huppert. “We have got to make sure these community facilities are protected better.”
In recent years, Cambridge has lost twenty of its pubs, many of which have been converted into accomodation.

MP joins fight to protect historic street lights

Julian Huppert MP has backed the campaign to protect the cast iron lighting columns in the city centre from being demolished by the Conservative-run County Council’s contractor.
The local MP has a meeting with the relevant department head at the County Council to discuss the issue.
Sarah Whitebread and the local Lib Dem team joined the campaign to protect the street lights after it emerged that they were under threat recently.
“We’ve had a great response from local residents to our petition to protect these lights, and it’s great that Julian is doing what he can,” said Sarah.
The County Council are still adamant that the cast iron columns need to be replaced. Sarah commented, “The streets in question are in a conservation area, but the County Council do not seem interested. There has been no public scrutiny or consultation over their decision.”
“The fight does not end here. We are currently looking into getting the columns listed, which would offer them extra protection”
