Cambridgeshire County Council will be carrying out essential carriageway resurfacing works to Elizabeth Way, from the Chesterton Road roundabout up to property No 4 adjacent to the Petrol Station.

The work will start on Monday 3rd June 2013 and will be carried out between the hours of 19:00hrs and 02:00hrs each night for two weeks.

During this period Elizabeth Way will be closed to all traffic coming northbound from the Newmarket Road/ East Road roundabout. Access to vehicles travelling Southbound from the Chesterton Road roundabout along Elizabeth Way will remain the same but will be controlled under traffic management.

Obviously there will be noise associated with the work and I apologise in advance for the disruption and inconvenience that this will cause you. Every effort will be made to keep the noisiest operations to a minimum and to complete the works as quickly as possible.

The signed diversion route for traffic travelling northbound will be via Newmarket Road, Maids Causeway, Victoria Avenue and Chesterton Road.

All businesses will be open as usual.

As part of the Love Your Local Market national media campaign, Cambridge Market’s food producers will be showcasing their products with free food tasting and live demonstrations on Saturday 18th & Sunday
19th May between 11am – 3pm. Come along & sample a fabulous array of local produce. The Mayor will open the event and at 11.30am will cut the ‘Love Your Local Market’ cake representing the fabulous array of commodities we have on Cambridge Markets, made by local cake maker Tom Dolby of Tom’s Cakes, who has a stall at the market on a Sunday.

Julie Smith, Executive Councillor for Customer Services & Resources said, “I am delighted that Cambridge City Council is supporting the ‘Love your Local Market’ campaign again this year and am really looking forward to the Taste of Cambridge Markets weekend, which will give residents and visitors to Cambridge the chance to see how fantastic Cambridge Markets are, if they haven’t already. Hopefully this will inspire them to enter the Markets competition.”

Only a few more days left to get your entries in for the ‘How do you see Cambridge Markets Artwork competition! So, get painting or drawing, come along and take some photographs of the market and its colourful characters & start writing those catchy songs! Maybe you like writing stories or poetry? How do you see Cambridge Market – this could be a picture from the past, how you see it now, or a futuristic view! Maybe the market traders will get up and sing your song! Perhaps you will come along and recite your poem – anything could happen at this event!

We will have 3 categories for this competition & will award a prize to the winner in each category. The competition is open to adults & children. The public will be invited to view & vote for their favourites. Voting slips will be available at the viewing. The collection will be displayed in the Guildhall, Market Square, Cambridge on Tuesday 21st & Wednesday 22nd May, between 10am – 3pm. Everyone who votes will be entered into a prize draw & the winner of the draw will receive a prize also, so come along and see this fantastic display!

A concept for the artwork to celebrate the role of the ‘Cambridge Rules’ in the formation of the Football Association (FA) Rules, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, has now been designed.

The City Council has commissioned the award winning artist Gordon Young to design an artwork to commemorate the significance that the ‘Cambridge Rules’ played in establishing the FA Rules, in 1863.

The ‘Cambridge Rules’ were first drawn up at a student meeting at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1848. The students sought to formulate a game that was acceptable to students who had played public school football with varying rules. The ‘Cambridge Rules’ are notable for the formal introduction of, amongst others, goal kicks, throw-ins, forward passes and for preventing running whilst holding the ball. These rules were very influential in the creation of the modern rules of Association Football, drawn up in London by the FA in 1863. Parker’s Piece has been chosen for the location for the artwork, as it was here that the Cambridge Rules of 1848 were first put into practice.

The artist Gordon Young said, ‘The design of the work is inspired from Parker’s Piece because the first written Rules were actually played here. The work is a celebration of this fact. The work comprises of a centre spot, the place from where the game kicked off and bold lettering, which states the original Cambridge Rules, in black & white, as laws should be. The letter font is itself based upon the original Rules. The figure at the centre spot is a referee, a deliberate generic interpretation representing all who have do the vital, essential, thankless task of following the rules. The artwork is located to have maximum impact and visitors are encouraged by the location to interact, pose, capture and remember a place with a history which is an important part of so many lives globally. The importance of Parker’s Piece as the starting point of everything in the world’s game is “a fact beyond argument”.’

Councillor Rod Cantrill Executive Councillor for Arts, Sport and Public Place said, ‘This project highlights Cambridge’s key role in the development of football into the modern game we know today. The artwork, inspired by the Cambridge Rules and where they were first played, underlines the importance of Parker’s Piece, not just to Cambridge, but to the world.’

Councillor Robert Dryden said, ‘I’m really pleased to see this project move forward to celebrate the importance of the first written rules of football. I hope people from all over the world will visit the artwork on Parker’s Piece to celebrate where it all began.’

Exhibition of the design will commence in late May and throughout June, providing the community the opportunity to comment on the design. Further details of planned activities during this period will follow shortly.

This public art commission is funded from city wide S106 developer contributions.

All refuse and recycling collections for Cambridge City in the week beginning Monday 6th May will take place one day later than normal, with Friday’s collection taking place on Saturday 11th.
