Double Tree By Hilton (Garden House Hotel) Planning Application

A planning application has been submitted by Double Tree to demolish the current leisure facility and build a single storey extension and provide a third floor extension to the southern block of the hotel (see link below). As residents will be aware, there have been two recent applications by the hotel relating to the proposed site, both of which City Council refused. The last application went to the Planning Inspectorate which upheld the Council’s decision. Cllr Andrea Reiner and colleagues from Newnham opposed the previous applications and spoke at the planning committee against it.

Residents may comment on the current application online by following this link.

High Capacity Cycle Stand Trial

This is a Cambridge City Council press release

Cambridge City Council are currently trialling a new design of high capacity cycle stand, as part of its major project to significantly increase the amount of secure cycle parking in the city centre.

The new cycle racks are a revision of the existing style of high capacity rack found in some locations in the city centre. This particular stand design facilitates closer spacing, is also shorter and therefore requires less space when empty. It also provides a fixed position for securing cycles to it, therefore reducing the risk of obstructions in confined pavement areas.

The trial location can be found in the small square next to Drummer Street Bus Station on Christ’s Lane. Cyclists are encouraged to try out these new stands and provide the City Council with their feedback by taking part in a short online survey by visiting www.surveymonkey.com/s/high-capacity-trial
A display board with QR code is also available at the trial location.

Councillor Tim Ward, Executive Councillor for Planning and Climate Change said ‘These cycle stands have been designed to accommodate higher density cycle parking whilst minimising their impact on the public realm. I hope cyclists will take the opportunity to trial them and provide their feedback to inform the final design.

Grants to encourage more people to walk or cycle more often

This is a city council press release:

Groups who want to promote cycling and walking in the city can apply for up to £5,000 funding from Cambridge City Council.

Grants will be given to groups who want to set up a project to encourage new cyclists, encourage people to walk or cycle more often, promote safer cycling and/or walking or reduce cycle theft.

Tim Ward, Executive Councillor for Planning and Climate Change said ‘We hope that local groups such as residents associations, voluntary organisations or charities will apply for funding which could cover anything from visitor cycle parking to organising cycle rides.’

Last year funding went to the You Can Hub which not only helps those with disabilities try out cycling on specially adapted bicycles, it also encourages their carers to take up cycling too.

The deadline for this round of funding is 11th October 2013.

To apply for this grant please go to www.cambridge.gov.uk/cycling or contact Clare Rankin on 457108 or e-mail clare.rankin@cambridge.gov.uk

Andrea Reiner, a Market Ward Councillor who also serves on the Cambridge City Council Cycle Parking Project Board, said, “I think this is a great initiative and hope many residents take advantage of the opportunity.”
